Often hailed as the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) presented one of the first and most thorough theories of self-development. The foundation of Freud's thesis is the idea of psychosexual phases, a theory that holds that a person's early experiences have a significant impact on their psychological development. The five separate phases of development are oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital, according to Freud. The erogenous zone that a child's libidinal energy is focused on at that specific moment defines each stage. A person's ability to successfully navigate and resolve disputes at every level is essential to their psychological growth. For example, the mouth serves as the main means of enjoyment and communication with the outside world throughout the oral stage, which lasts from birth to around 18 months. A baby finds enjoyment in oral actions like biting and sucking. According to Freud, fixation at this point, brought on by either extreme satisfaction or irritation, may result in adult personality characteristics like dependence or violence. The regulation and expulsion of body waste are the main objectives of the anal stage, which lasts from around 18 months to three years. According to Freud, a person's toilet training experiences might influence their personality in the future, resulting in characteristics like neatness or messiness. The Oedipus complex, which occurs in children between the ages of three and six, denotes the phallic stage, during which they have animosity towards their same-sex parent and unconscious sexual yearning for their opposite-sex parent. The superego develops and identification with the same-sex parent results from the effective resolution of this complex. The six years leading up to puberty are known as the latency stage. During this time, youngsters engage in social and intellectual pursuits while their sexual drives are suppressed. At last, during the genital stage, which begins at puberty, people look for sexual relationships that are mature and incorporate the different facets of their personalities that have grown over the course of earlier stages. If these phases are not effectively completed, neuroses and other psychological problems may arise in maturity, according to Freud. By highlighting the lifetime character of the process, Erik Erikson (1902–1994) built on Freud's seminal work and broadened our knowledge of personality formation. Erikson offered a psychosocial theory that emphasised the importance of social and cultural influences across the lifetime, in contrast to Freud, who concentrated mostly on early infancy and the influence of primal human drives. Erikson's theory consists of eight stages, each of which has a unique conflict that needs to be addressed in order for development to proceed normally. Trust against mistrust in early childhood; autonomy against shame and doubt in early childhood; initiative against guilt in preschool; industry against inferiority in school age; identity against role confusion in adolescence; intimacy against isolation in young adulthood; generativity against stagnation in middle adulthood; and integrity against despair in late adulthood are some examples of these stages. According to Erikson, the emergence of a particular virtue or strength—such as hope, will, purpose, competence, faithfulness, love, caring, and wisdom—occurs when a conflict is resolved. For instance, in the first stage, when an infant's needs are regularly addressed by carers, they grow to trust the outside world and their own power to shape it. On the other hand, erratic or careless treatment might breed mistrust and hinder the person's capacity to build stable connections in the future. Erikson's approach emphasises the notion that personality changes as people take on new experiences and difficulties, implying that selfimprovement and personal development are continuous endeavours. Another significant contributor in developmental psychology, Jean Piaget (1896–1980), concentrated on the cognitive facets of self-development. According to Piaget's theory of cognitive development, children actively create their conception of the world via a succession of phases, each of which is distinguished by a unique style of learning and thinking. The four stages of his theory are preoperational, formal operational, concrete operational, and sensorimotor. The significance of social connections and the environment in influencing cognitive development are highlighted in Piaget's work. Infants use their senses and their movements to learn about the world during the sensorimotor period, which lasts from birth to roughly two years. They acquire object permanence, which is the first step towards representational thought—the knowledge that objects exist even when they are invisible. While language and symbolic thinking are developing throughout the preoperational period (two to seven years old), children at this age are still egocentric and have difficulty comprehending other viewpoints. Children begin to understand logical ideas at the seven to eleven-year-old concrete operational stage, when they begin to understand concepts like conservation, categorization, and seriation. They still think in terms of tangible things and experiences, though. Adolescence to adulthood, the formal operational stage, is defined by the capacity for systematic, logical, and abstract thought. At this level, adults and adolescents are capable of making assumptions, weighing options, and using logical reasoning. According to Piaget's theory, which emphasises the dynamic interaction between an individual and their environment, cognitive growth is a process of ongoing adaptation and knowledge reorganisation. The adaptive aspect of human cognition is highlighted by his idea of equilibration, which is the balance between assimilation—integrating new information into preexisting schemas—and accommodation—modifying schemas to include new information. The theories of Piaget, Erikson, and Freud when combined offer a thorough knowledge of selfdevelopment by fusing social, psychological, and biological aspects. The influence of early experiences and unconscious processes on personality development is highlighted by Freud's focus on early childhood and psychosexual phases. By highlighting the importance of social and cultural elements as well as the reality that personality development is a lifetime process, Erikson's psychosocial theory expands on the developmental timeline. A significant component is added by Piaget's cognitive development theory, which examines how people create and modify their worldviews in response to interactions with their surroundings.
