Despite originating from various historical settings and philosophical stances, their contributions together provide the fundamental basis of contemporary sociological viewpoints. Émile Durkheim, who is widely seen as a key figure in the development of contemporary sociology, highlighted the significance of social facts—that is, the societal norms, values, and institutional frameworks that extend beyond the actions of individuals. The foundation of Durkheim's thinking was the idea that society is a complex system with its own distinct laws and qualities, rather than just the sum of its components. He popularised the idea of the collective conscience, which is a group of moral principles and shared ideas that serve as a uniting factor in society. "The Division of Labour in Society," one of his foundational works, examines how social cohesiveness is preserved in various social contexts: organic solidarity in more complex, contemporary societies marked by specialisation and interdependence, and mechanical solidarity in simpler societies with a high degree of homogeneity. In his work "The Elementary Forms of Religious Life," Durkheim also made a substantial contribution to the study of religion and its social roles by examining the ways in which religious rituals strengthen social solidarity. Furthermore, his research on suicide, "Suicide: A Study in Sociology," showed the significant impact of social structures on individual acts by highlighting the ways in which social integration and regulation affect behaviour. Whereas Durkheim concentrated on societal stability and coherence, Karl Marx used a conflict-oriented approach, focusing his study on the conflicts between various social classes. Marx's critique of capitalism, which is presented in books like "Das Kapital" and "The Communist Manifesto," forms the basis of his theoretical contributions. According to Marx, there are two primary groups in society: the bourgeoisie, who own the means of production, and the proletariat, who sell their labour. He said that because of the intrinsic exploitative nature of this economic connection, class struggle results. According to Marx's historical materialism thesis, the main forces influencing social development are economic and material conditions. He thought that a classless, communist society will eventually emerge and overthrow the capitalist system due to its inherent contradictions. Sociological theory has also benefited greatly from Marx's theories on alienation, which hold that workers become separated from their labour, their output, and their own human potential. His focus on class connections and economic systems continues to influence modern theories of social justice, power, and inequality. Despite drawing inspiration from both Durkheim and Marx, Max Weber created a more complex theory of society. Weber's methodological approach, known as Verstehen, is characterised by its emphasis on the subjective meanings that people ascribe to their activities and the significance of comprehending social activity from the actor's perspective. In his groundbreaking book "Economy and Society," Weber presented his theory of rationalization—which explains how conventional ways of thinking are replaced with an emphasis on efficiency, predictability, and calculability—as well as the idea of social action. One of the basic tenets of organisational sociology is Weber's description of bureaucracy as an extremely efficient and organised type of organisation. In "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism," he claimed that the Protestant work ethic was a key factor in the growth of capitalism in the West. He also made an important contribution to the sociology of religion. Compared to Marx's class-centric model, Weber's theory of social stratification—which takes rank, party, and class into account—offers a more complex view of social hierarchies. His theories of power and authority, which differentiate between charismatic, traditional, and legal-rational authority, provide a framework for evaluating the stability and validity of various governmental structures. In addition to being fundamental, Durkheim, Marx, and Weber all made significant theoretical contributions that are in many respects complementary. Marx's emphasis on conflict and economic determinism is countered by Durkheim's focus on social cohesiveness and the integrative roles of societal norms. A link between Durkheim and Marx's structural analyses and Weber's interpretative approach, which emphasises individual action and cultural elements, is provided. When combined, these theorists provide sociologists an extensive arsenal for examining a broad variety of social phenomena, from the micro-level interactions between individuals to the macro-level architecture of civilizations. Over time, as these theories were refined and scrutinised, a number of sociological paradigms—including structural functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and critical theory—that build upon the fundamental discoveries of these pioneering thinkers emerged. The influences of Durkheim, Marx, and Weber are still felt in modern sociology. The study of social institutions and quantitative research have benefited from Durkheim's approaches. Discussions on economic inequality and global capitalism continue to revolve around Marx's theories of capitalism and class struggle. The study of contemporary organisations and the intricacies of social stratification benefit from Weber's observations on rationalisation and bureaucracy. In addition to influencing sociology, these three intellectuals created the theoretical foundation for contemporary social sciences. Their continued relevance serves as a reminder of how crucial their research was in advancing our knowledge of how societies change over time and the complex web of interactions that characterises human social existence.
