Rigid hierarchical structures in closed stratification systems, where social positions are mostly assigned and unchangeable, are their defining feature. It is nearly hard for people to shift between different social levels under such systems since they allow for little to no change in social status. Strict societal rules and legislation that forbid social ties between various strata, therefore upholding the existing social order, frequently encourage this immobility. Slavery, caste, and estate systems are three well-known instances of closed stratification systems. The majority of feudal societies, especially in mediaeval Europe, had estate systems. These systems separated society into many classes or orders, including the clergy, the nobles, and the ordinary people. There were unique rights and responsibilities for each estate, and social mobility was severely constrained. For example, the land and privileged position of the nobles were passed down to them, whilst the peasants were confined to the land they farmed and had little prospects to rise in society. One of the most severe examples of closed stratification systems is slavery. People who lived in slave civilizations had little personal freedom and were owned by others. Slaves might be purchased, sold, or inherited and were regarded as property. It was impossible for a slave to advance in society since their status as slaves was set. Slavery was legitimised and maintained by a variety of ideological and legal strategies, frequently on the basis of race or ethnicity, which strengthened social divisions. Another classic illustration of a closed stratification system is the caste system, which is most prominently used in India. Under the caste system, people are assigned to particular social groups or castes at birth, which determines their profession, relationships with others, and opportunities for marriage. Strict social norms and religious beliefs that uphold the cleanliness and filth associated with certain castes are what sustain the caste structure. The idea of karma and dharma, which holds that a person's social standing is determined by their deeds in past lifetimes and that doing one's caste obligations would improve one's lot in subsequent reincarnations, is fundamental to the justification of the caste system. Open systems of stratification, in contrast to closed ones, are achievement-based and permit interaction and mobility across various social classes and strata. These more adaptable structures provide people the chance to raise their social standing via their own initiatives, such as talent, hard work, and education. Modern industrial societies, where meritocracy is idealised as equal chances and rewards based on individual merit, are frequently linked to open systems. The most prevalent type of open stratification systems are class systems. Social positions within a class system are mostly based on economic characteristics including money, income, employment, and education. Class systems, as opposed to closed ones, permit social mobility in both directions. Through changes in their financial circumstances or personal accomplishments, people can move up or down the social class ladder. Social contacts between members of various classes are more prevalent and tolerated under class systems, which are more flexible and less strict than caste systems. One of the main characteristics of open stratification systems is the meritocracy principle. Under a meritocratic social structure, an individual's success and standing are determined by their own ability, efforts, and accomplishments rather than by their social standing or personal relationships. Everybody has an equal chance to thrive in a meritocratic society, where incentives are given out according to merit. The principles of individuality, equality, and justice—values essential to contemporary democratic societies—are intimately associated with this concept.
