Lawrence Kohlberg (1927–1987) is one of the most well-known researchers in the field of moral development. His contributions have had a significant impact on our comprehension of how humans acquire the ability to discriminate between good and bad. Preconventional, conventional, and postconventional are the three separate stages that make up Kohlberg's theory of moral growth. Each level denotes a unique degree of moral reasoning and ethical thinking. Preconventional children see the world mostly through their senses since they do not yet possess a higher level of cognitive aptitude. Their conception of morality is selfish and concrete; it is founded more on what will directly affect them than on any social mores or other people's needs. At this age, children may follow the rules just to get rewards or to escape punishment, demonstrating a limited comprehension of the wider consequences of their behaviour. For instance, rather than realising that striking is inherently bad, a youngster may choose not to strike a sibling out of fear of receiving a reprimand from a parent. This stage demonstrates the primitive, self-centered character of moral reasoning, when decisions are made primarily on the basis of the immediate bodily effects of a course of action rather than any abstract moral precepts. Children reach the traditional stage of moral development throughout their teenage years, when they mature and develop cognitively. The hallmarks of this stage include a growing capacity to take other people's sentiments into account when judging what is "good" or "bad." In the conventional stage, people start to internalise society values and norms and see them as necessary to preserve relationships and social order. Their moral thinking starts to lean more towards law and order and societal acceptance. Teens, for example, may obey school regulations not only to avoid getting in trouble but also because they think it's necessary to maintain order in the school. As they become more aware of the significance of social roles and expectations, they frequently make an effort to fit in and appear like "good" people. According to Kohlberg's thesis, the postconventional level is the last stage, during which people start to understand the intricacy of ethical concepts and start thinking about morality in abstract terms. At this point, moral thinking is grounded on abstract principles and reasoning that may go beyond particular laws or social norms. People that function at the postconventional level are aware that morality and law are not necessarily synonymous. They begin to assess societal norms and regulations more closely, wondering if they are consistent with more lofty ethical standards like equality, fairness, and human rights. For instance, postconventional thinking is used by Americans who hold that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They see these ideas as essential to human dignity and value, even when certain laws may go against them. At this point, a person is capable of moral thinking that considers the larger good and moral precepts that could go against accepted legal precedents or social standards. In 2011, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians demonstrated against government corruption, providing a real-world illustration of postconventional morality. These people knew that even if their government was legitimately in charge, its policies were immoral. Even in the face of hazards to their safety and well-being, they showed by protesting that they were committed to higher ethical ideals like justice, fairness, and the benefit of society. This example shows how ethical considerations that put the rights and well-being of people and communities first are used to evaluate and challenge society systems in postconventional moral reasoning. Kohlberg's theory of moral development offers a framework for comprehending how people's moral reasoning changes over time as a result of social experiences and cognitive growth. It draws attention to the development of morality from a self-centered, consequentialist perspective to a more complex, abstract one that takes into account larger ethical principles and the greater good. We may better understand the difficulties involved in making moral decisions and the elements that influence moral development in persons when we are aware of the many phases of moral development. Comprehending this procedure is vital in cultivating ethical growth in people and advocating for a fairer and more principled community.
