Vassals swore military allegiance to their lords in exchange for the resources and economic advantages these territories produced, creating a mutually advantageous yet intricate relationship based on duty and devotion. The core of feudal society were the fiefdoms, which functioned as hubs for local government, military organisation, and commerce. These lands were farmed and maintained by the lower class, which was primarily made up of peasants. Due to their ties to the land they farmed, these peasants were essential to the feudal economy's survival. Peasants were guaranteed a place to dwell in return for their labour and upkeep of the agricultural environment, typically in simple but secure quarters within the manor. More significantly, at an era of frequent invasions and intercommunal strife, they were assured of protection from outside dangers. The very vassals entrusted with the land frequently supplied this security, establishing a defensive system that defended the feudal lands against roving bands and competing lords. A number of oaths and rituals that emphasised the social contracts of the era solidified the bond between rulers, vassals, and peasants. In a ceremonial ritual that frequently included the symbolic act of kneeling and the exchanging of emblems like rings or portions of land, vassals would pledge allegiance to their lords. This ceremony upheld the hierarchical structure of feudal society while also validating the vassal's claim to the domain. In a same vein, peasants were frequently bound by inherited duties to the land, with families working for the same lord for many generations. This consistency guaranteed a steady and predictable labour force, which was essential to preserving the agrarian economy that was the foundation of feudalism. As a social and economic structure, feudalism was firmly based on the ideas of allegiance, subordination, and land ownership. In the lord-vassal relationship, vassals supplied military duty and advice in exchange for the lord's protection and territory. From the vast estates of Western Europe to the remote manors in the east, this system forged a dispersed but interconnected web of allegiances that spanned the continent. The size and richness of the fiefdoms varied, reflecting the various political and geographical contexts of mediaeval Europe. While some fiefdoms were large and included entire areas, others were smaller and included just a few villages and the farmlands around them. The core of the feudal economy was the peasantry, sometimes known as serfs. The seasons and their masters' demands, along with the rhythms of agricultural labour, shaped their everyday life. Cooperation was vital for life in the tiny, tight-knit communities where serfs resided. Peasants were vital to the feudal system's continuation despite their lower standing. Through different types of tribute and taxes, their labour not only generated the food and raw materials needed to feed the higher classes of society, but it also boosted the local economy. Peasants depended on their lords, who functioned as both military commanders and judicial authorities, to provide them with safety and justice in exchange. Titles and lands were passed down by hereditary succession from one generation to the next, maintaining the power dynamics within feudal society. The continuance of aristocratic families and their hegemony over large lands was guaranteed by this system of inheritance. A dramatic move towards more contemporary forms of government was signalled by the emergence of centralised monarchy, which aimed to minimise the influence of the nobles and concentrate authority. The Renaissance and the start of the modern era were marked by the slow but significant shift from feudalism to capitalism. The 18th century saw the start of the Industrial Revolution, which brought new economic structures and technological advancements that eventually made the feudal system obsolete. A new social and economic environment defined by capitalism and industrialization was brought about by the growth of factories, mechanised production, and urbanisation. The connection between people and their means of subsistence was drastically changed when wage labour and market economies took the place of the feudal links of land and service.
