It is also flexible and subject to change when people or groups acculturate, assimilate, or undergo changes in their cultural customs. Whatever their skin colour or nation of origin, those classified as "minorities" are those that are marginalised or weak in society. A minority group differs from a majority group not just in terms of numbers but also in terms of resources and influence. This definition emphasises the sociological viewpoint that being a minority involves more than just numbers—it involves social status and power relations. For instance, in the history of the United States today, the elderly may be seen as a minority population because of the prejudice and discrimination that have lowered their position. Abuse can take many different forms as a result. Sociologists can appreciate cultural variety and comprehend how cultural practices and history shape people's identities and experiences when they are able to identify people based on their ethnicity. The systematic injustices and power disparities that exist in society are brought to light by acknowledging minority groups and their experiences of subordination.
