In pre-industrial communities, women were usually in charge of domestic tasks like childrearing, cooking, and housekeeping, while males were usually assigned to outside chores like hunting and family protection. Because these occupations complied with the constraints and physical reality of the period, they were seen as useful. Women were unable to leave the house for long stretches of time because they were frequently constrained by the physical demands of pregnancy and lactation. By dividing up the work, this system made sure that everything needed to be done quickly and effectively, which kept the family and society running smoothly. After these gender roles were created, they were transmitted from generation to generation and firmly embedded in society standards and expectations. The family structure as a whole benefited from the stability these positions offered, which supported the notion that these roles were normal and advantageous. The claim that these roles were necessary to preserve social harmony and order was reinforced by their continued existence. In order to sustain the economy and aid in the war effort, women were forced to take on the role of breadwinner and work in offices, factories, and other settings. Due to the fact that women now had to juggle their new duties as wage earners with their home obligations, this shift contradicted the previous functionalist conception of gender roles. Due to this resistance, gender roles became unbalanced, since the functionalist perspective of the past was out of step with post-World War II realities. Many families found it impractical or undesirable to go back to a single-income family structure, which sparked continuous discussions and changes to gender roles in the home. The importance of dual-income homes and the contributions made by women to the economy were both emphasised more throughout the post-war era.
