Some faiths have been transitory, rising and declining with the communities that created them, while others have shown amazing persistence, spreading across continents and adapting to new circumstances across millennia. In this conversation, we will investigate seven of the world’s main religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the Bahá'í Faith, exploring their origins, essential beliefs, practices, and their ongoing effect on the globe. Hinduism, widely considered as the oldest of the world’s main faiths, has no one founder and is a complex synthesis of diverse cultural and spiritual traditions that have formed throughout the Indian subcontinent over thousands of years. Central to Hindu doctrine is the notion of dharma, or duty, which is considered important for sustaining cosmic order. The religion contains a broad diversity of deities, with Brahman seen as the ultimate reality or world soul. Key writings include the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and the epics Mahabharata and Ramayana. Hindu traditions are extensive, ranging from ceremonies, pilgrimages, and festivals to yoga and meditation. The caste system, although now legally abolished in India, has traditionally been a key social structure within Hindu culture. Buddhism developed in the 6th century BCE with Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, who strove to find a solution to human suffering. Central to Buddhist teaching is the Four Noble Truths, which diagnose the issue of suffering and provide a method to its cessation through the Eightfold method. This method encourages ethical conduct, mental discipline, and wisdom. Buddhism separates into many major traditions: Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, each having unique interpretations and practices. Important texts include the Tripitaka, the Mahayana Sutras, and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Meditation, mindfulness, and monastic living are major parts of Buddhist practice, leading to its growth across Asia and beyond. Sikhism, created in the 15th century in the Punjab area by Guru Nanak and successive gurus, stresses the oneness of God, the equality of all humans, and the necessity of true living, social justice, and community service. The fundamental religious literature is the Guru Granth Sahib, a compendium of songs and poetry that encourage believers in their spiritual practice. Sikhism rejects the caste structure and traditional traditions, proposing instead for a direct contact with God via devotion and remembering of God's name. The religion emphasises a disciplined life of honest labour, sharing with the community, and supporting the rights of the underprivileged, summarised in the ideals of Kirat Karni (make an honest living), Naam Japna (remember God's name), and Vand Chakna (share with others). Judaism, one of the earliest monotheistic religions, dates its beginnings to the covenant formed between God and Abraham, and subsequently evolved via the rules provided to Moses. Central to Jewish theology is the notion of a single, omniscient, omnipotent, and benign God who created the universe and continues to control it. The Torah, covering the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, along with the Talmud and other rabbinic works, are the primary scriptures guiding Jewish life and practice. Jewish rites and festivals, such as Passover, Yom Kippur, and Hanukkah, are strongly based in historical events and aim to strengthen communal identity and continuity. Jewish ethical beliefs stress justice, kindness, and the desire of peace. Christianity, arising from Judaism in the 1st century CE with the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, stresses redemption via trust in Jesus as the Son of God and the savior of humanity. The New Testament, notably the Gospels, chronicles Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, which are important to Christian belief. Over the years, Christianity has evolved into several denominations, including Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism, each with its own teachings, practices, and organizational structures. Christian worship often incorporates social meetings, prayer, and sacraments such as baptism and the Eucharist. The religion has greatly affected Western civilization, contributing to its cultural, intellectual, and political growth. Islam, founded in the 7th century CE by the Prophet Muhammad, is centred on the belief in one God, Allah, and the prophethood of Muhammad. The Quran, considered the actual word of God as revealed to Muhammad, coupled with the Hadith, records of the sayings and acts of the Prophet, are the fundamental books directing Muslim life. The Five Pillars of Islam— faith, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and pilgrimage—form the core of Muslim activity. Islam has a rich heritage of scholarship, art, and architecture, and has played a major part in the history and development of regions from the Middle East to Southeast Asia. The notion of ummah, or worldwide Muslim community, underlines the necessity of unity and collective duty among Muslims. The Bahá'í Faith, the youngest of the world’s major faiths, was founded in the 19th century by Bahá'u'lláh in Persia. It stresses the oneness of all faiths and the belief in a single God who has revealed himself gradually via numerous prophets, including Abraham, Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, and Bahá'u'lláh himself. The Bahá'í teachings call for world peace, the elimination of discrimination, the equality of men and women, and the concord of science and religion. The core texts of the Bahá'í Faith include the works of Bahá'u'lláh, such as the Kitáb-i-Aqdas and the Kitáb-i-Íqán. Bahá'í communities across the world engage in social and economic development initiatives, expressing their dedication to the benefit of humanity. Each of these religions has contributed distinctively to the spiritual, cultural, and social fabric of human history. Their teachings, practices, and communities have offered meaning, purpose, and guidance to billions of individuals throughout time and place.
