PHYSICAL EDUCATION LESSON PLAN PESH Lesson Title: Passing the basketball, chest and bounce pass. Grade Level: 5th Central Focus of Learning Segment: Prior Academic Knowledge and Concept: The central focus of this learning segment is to teach students the basketball skills of passing in two ways and how to use these in a game-like situation. Student should have at least touched a basketball before and played with one. The prior knowledge isn’t necessary. They should be able to catch or throw a ball of any type prior. Learning Targets (Psychomotor, Cognitive, and Affective): Student Friendly Learning Targets: Psychomotor: Student will be able to demonstrate how to pass accurately 9 out of 10 times. Psychomotor: I will be able to demonstrate how to pass 9 out of 10 times. Cognitive: Student will be able to identify the movements of a bounce pass on a written test with 85% accuracy. Affective: The learner will take turns throwing a chest pass to their partner and will complete 9 out of 10 chest passes that conform to a correct chest past. Cognitive: I will be able to identify the movements of a bounce pass on a written test with 85% accuracy. Affective: I will take turns throwing a chest pass to my partner and will complete 9 out of 10 correct chest passes. Assessment: Assessment Commentary: The assessment will be a 3 question exit slip that will be given to the students 5 minutes before PE class gets out. (For the purpose of the lesson plan being done in class with a time limit, the assessment is given orally and students can discuss among each other what the answers are.) During the assessment students will be working on the 3 question exit slip. Equipment: Instructional Materials, Technology, Resources: (Identify clearly what type of assessment will be used and identify the strategies to help measure the learning targets in the lesson) Equipment needed for this assessment will be basketballs and cones. Bell Basketball Instructional materials needed are basketballs, pencils, exit slip assessment. Class Guidelines, Rules, and Protocols: Rule #1: Be respectful Rule #2: Follow Directions Rule #3: Put materials away Rule #4: Be a team player Model of Delivery : Differentiation of Learning Styles : Instruction will be delivered through direct instruction, as well as through cooperative learning. The learning styles being used are Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic. Specific Learning Needs: Kate, is a student who is has a visual impairment. Kate is legally blind and will need equipment modifications. When teaching passing Kate will be taught the bounce pass so that she can hear the ball before she catches it. When being taught to score, a pole will be used for Kate to touch the backboard. Also, Kate will have bell basketball. LESSON TASKS Time Time: 3 min Description (task type, Cues, etc.) Set induction: Teacher will address the class and talk about the chest and bounce pass. How it applies to basketball. Managerial descriptions (explanations, diagrams, etc.) Time: 5 min Warm up/Instant activity: Defensive slides/arm swings Stretch arms Stretch legs Safety Concerns: Student pulls muscle falls down when running in place. Time: 5 min Informing Task: “Holding a basketball” When students begin, I will have them stand in a semi circle around me, holding a basketball (if not enough, they will pretend). I will talk about what types of passes are used in basketball and ask if they know any of them and can demonstrate. I will then give the cues of holding a basketball, shown below, and ask them to do the same. I will go around and be sure they are doing it correctly and those who don’t have a basketball will get an opportunity to do so. Cues: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Time: 5 min Wide hands Grip on the two ends Head and eyes up Hands ready (if catching) Step with dominant foot Extension Task: “Passing to partner” Players will learn how to pass to their partner using a chest pass. I will ask the students to tell when they think a chest pass is used in a game situation. Then students will line up with a partner around 3-4 feet from each other and begin to chest pass until each person chest passes 5 S S S S S S S S S S T times. Will move back 3 steps and go 5 more then stop when ready to move on. Cues: 1. Start in front of chest with hands on the ball. 2. Push the ball forward away from your chest but toward your partner's chest 3. Hands should end with the back of your hands facing each other and thumbs down. 4. Hands up ready to receive the pass back. Safety Concerns: Partner throwing ball too hard for other partner. Getting hit in the face. Teaching by invitation: Students may start further back. Time: 5 min Extension Task: “Bounce Pass” After students have the chance to learn how to chest pass, they will learn how to bounce pass. I will ask if a student can demonstrate and tell me what consists of a bounce pass. When the bounce pass is used. Cues: 1. Start in front of chest with hands on the ball. 2. Push the ball forward toward away from your chest to the middle between your partner and you. 3. Hands should end with the back of your hands facing each other and thumbs down. 4. Hands up ready to receive the pass back. Teaching by invitation: Students may start further back. S S S S S S S S S S T Safety Concerns: Basketballs may go flying; students need to keep eyes out for other students retrieving their basketballs. Application Task: “ThreeMan Weave” Students will do the three man weave drill by first doing by first chest passing and then bounce passing. Cues: 1. Chest and bounce pass cues while... 2. Follow your pass 3. At the end stop, go to sidelines and back to beginning. Safety Concerns: Students too quick for others Students trip over their feet Time: 5 Closure min After the lesson students will be given an exit slip to determine their understanding of the chest and bounce pass.
