Innocence Project
Jimmy Ray bromgard
Date of Crime: March 20, 1987. Date of conviction: Nov 19, 2002
Details of the Crime:
A young 18 year old girl was attacked in her home by an intruder that broke in through
the window. She was then raped vaginally, orally, and anally. The man then left after
stealing a purse and jacket. The girl was checked out by police the same day. The
police collected her underwear and bed sheets from where the crime had happened.
Semen was identified on the underwear and some hairs were found on the bed sheet.
The police were able to create a sketch of the intruder from the victim and an officer that
was familiar with him thought Bomgard resembled the sketch.
Reasons for the wrongful conviction and exoneration:
Bomgard agreed to participate in a lineup, which was videotaped. The Victim picked
Bomgard out, but she wasn’t sure it was the right man. She said she was 60%, 65%
sure. The semen found on the underwear could not be typed, but the pubic hairs found
on the sheets were a match from Bromgard’s hair samples. People thought that
testimony was a lie because you couldn’t match hairs through a microscope inspection.
the only other evidence was a checkbook from the victim’s purse that was found on the
same street where Bromgard lived.
Jimmy Ray Bromgard was eighteen years old when he was convicted of this crime. He
spent fourteen and a half years in prison before DNA testing proved his innocence.
