Identifying redox reactions, oxidizing agents, and reducing agents requires assigning oxidation states to all atoms in the reaction. If there's an increase in oxidation state for one element and a decrease in oxidation state for another, it indicates a redox reaction. Let's consider an example. Solid aluminum starts with an oxidation state of zero because it is a free element. Aqueous silver ions are monatomic ions, so their oxidation state is equal to the charge, which is +1. Aqueous aluminum ions, also monatomic ions, have an oxidation state of +3. Solid silver, being a free element, has an oxidation state of zero. From these oxidation states, we observe that aluminum changes from 0 to +3. This signifies that aluminum is oxidized since its oxidation state increased. Consequently, solid aluminum acts as the reducing agent, as it undergoes oxidation and forces something else to undergo reduction by gaining electrons. Furthermore, silver changes its oxidation state from +1 to 0. This change indicates that silver is reduced, as its oxidation state decreases. The silver ions in aqueous solutions thus serve as the oxidizing agents. Through reduction, the silver ions cause aluminum to undergo oxidation. Now, let's examine another example. We'll assign oxidation states to the elements involved. Starting with sulfur trioxide, the sum of the oxidation states of all atoms in a neutral molecule is zero. Therefore, sulfur plus three oxygen equals zero. Both sulfur and oxygen are nonmetals, with oxygen higher in the table. Assigning -2 to oxygen allows us to calculate the oxidation state of sulfur, which is +6. For H2O, the sum of the oxidation states should also be zero. So, two hydrogen plus oxygen equals zero. Since hydrogen is higher in the nonmetal table, we assign it an oxidation state of +1. The oxidation state of oxygen can then be calculated as -2. Lastly, for sulfuric acid, the sum of the oxidation states of all atoms should be zero. Therefore, two hydrogen plus sulfur plus four oxygen equals zero. All three elements are nonmetals, but hydrogen and oxygen rank higher. Hence, we assign +1 to hydrogen, -2 to oxygen, and calculate sulfur's oxidation state, which turns out to be +6.
