Having a personal mission statement helps you to keep yourself motivated to keep going. Short-term goals are there to get you to your long-term goal. For example, I want to get a car (that is my long-term goal), and one of my short-term goals is to get my license. For me to complete my long-term goal, I will need to complete my short-term goal first.
