ASL Notes Chapter 1  ASL Started by some guy (Forget his name) went to France to learn how to build a school o Met a Girl named Claire who he took back home on a boat to help build a school  They taught each other English and ASL  They together created the school, Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb Persons in April 15th, 1817 o The first student was a deaf girl named Alice  President Monroe and President Lincoln were known for their presence with the ASL School o Monroe was president when the American School for the deaf (New name for the school listed above) was established  They knew Monroe was coming because a kid climbed in a tree and shouted, they were on his way  And a kid did a sign symbol for president which is the triangle hats they wore o President Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial has his hands rest on the chair with the sign letters L and A Chapter 11: Is there one sign language for all countries?  No there is not! o USA and Canada use ASL o China has six different iterations o Italy has its own o Germany has its own  When two different people come together knowing two different ASL languages, they would be able to semi be able to communicate with each other because they know how to communicate visually o Gestuno : a gesture-based language that describes how people of different ASL languages are able to communicate
