What is Mise-en-scène?
We all love watching films, but few of us have ever considered the many elements that screenwriters,
cinematographers, and directors use to shape the narrative. Just like it’s important to know poetic terms when
unpacking a poem or literary features when unpacking a literary extract, we must also be aware of the terminology of
films and how manipulating these variables can have an effect on the audience. The following table can be helpful
when considering the many elements of a “shot” and how they shape meaning for the viewer.
