Speaker: Ferris Bueller Audience: Teenagers Message: Enjoy your life even if you have to break rules to do it. From the first lines, Ferris seeks to connect with the audience through syntax. When he says, “They bought it. Incredible!”, it demonstrates his understanding of the teenage audience. It allows the audience to feel like they were in on the joke, which causes the audience to identify with Ferris as if he were a friend. As a result, the audience is led to trust him and follow his advice. As the monologue develops, Ferris shifts by using the conversational pacing to provide step-by-step instructions on how to effectively skip school. For example, he provides tells the audience that “the key to faking out the parents is the clammy hands.” Through this technique, the speaker builds a tone of knowledge showing himself to be an expert since it’s his ninth successful day doing this, so it encourages the audience to trust him. By the conclusion, he ends with the philosophical diction reminding the audience that it’s important to enjoy life. The quote “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” This moment reflects a shift in tone encourage the audience to enjoy life. The tone created by this choice invites the audience to reflect on their own life, and since he has built trust from the beginning, they will be more likely to take his advice even if it means breaking the rules.
