Is Racism Growing In Our Society?

Borg 1 Andrea Borg Professor Gregg Core English 2 2/19/2020 Is racism growing in our society? I come from a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea called Malta, however, I have never lived there. For the majority of my life I have lived in England and Dubai, living in Dubai for ten years and England for five years. In Dubai I have never observed or had been a victim of racisms; it is a very multi-cultural country. Going to school in Dubai I have socialized and hung out with people from all over the globe; everyone being accepted for who they are and not being judged form where they are from. On the other hand, when I moved to England, I experienced a lot of racism in which I did not expect which shook me. When I used to go watch a soccer game, I could hear the fans chanting monkey noises to the black players which really touched me and was not acceptable at any cost. This problem only grew and has been causing a lot of distress towards the players, some of them wanting to retire to get out of the situation and most of them refusing to play not to go through the torture. Also, it is affecting new generations who a are witnessing this on television and persuading them not go be involved in the sport due to racism. Overall I think racism has to be dealt with properly because in my lifetime of playing soccer I have experienced racism that no one should ever have to deal with, especially at the age Borg 2 I experienced it all. Racism bounces off others in crowds so if one person starts it, it is only going to spread. One of the short stories I read was “Cheaters guide to love”, which is an interesting story in which a man cheated on his fiancée more than fifty times and then not being accepted back in her circle. He then moves to Boston to try and move on with his life and start a new chapter, however, unfortunately he experiences racial persecution from police and citizens. All these things adding together, overwhelms him which causes him to get a depression. If the female cheated on the male, would he have given her an extra chance? Is he not given another chance because he is considered a “fuck boy”? One theory that could be considered here is that he is not given another chance is because he is Hispanic which could drive to the stereotype that they cheat on girls and not treat them with respect, which I do not believe at all. In the Hispanic culture there is something called Machismo, “Macho in Portuguese and Spanish is a , this shows that where there is a set of values between males strictly masculine term” (Wikipedia) and females and is the sense of a man to feel more manly which could lead to men cheating on their girlfriends. So Yunior’s fiancée might take that perspective and judge him on his culture which is not right because you don’t judge someone for the history of their culture but of how they are today. When I moved to England what shook me the most Is that when I moved from such a dimensional place with lots of different cultures and no one being judged, I experienced racism myself in England. I heard people calling me a “foreign cunt” when I dribbled past a defender and unfortunately, that is not the only experience I have had. I have also had people telling me to get “on the boat back to Malta”. At first, comments like these really affected me because I was Borg 3 still young living away from home without my parents until I eventually managed to get used to it. Scenarios like these happen every day in a professional level and even in youth team level which could lead kids who are still developing to depression which could sadly cause a suicidal mentality. Which is not right for anyone to go through. Also it is preventing young kids to stop playing which for most kids its their dream to make a professional career in soccer. Racism should not belong in our society because it puts so many people in an uncomfortable position that could potentially stop people from reaching their dreams and goals. When one person starts being racist in a crowd, most people follow these actions and that’s how racism operated and keeps spreading. Its an infectious behavior. When Yunior moved to Boston to try and move on with his life it only made it worse due to all the racism, “You have trouble adjusting to it full time—to its trains that stop running at midnight, to the glumness of its inhabitants, to its startling lack of Szechuan food. Almost on cue, a lot of racist shit starts happening” (Cheater’s guide to love). This quote suggests that he is having trouble moving on with his life for the better because of what is going on in Boston. Similarly, this is what happened to me when I moved to England because I tried to move to England to better my life and go and have a good career in the soccer industry, but I believe that the people there made me very uncomfortable telling me to go back to my country and that I am a foreigner indicating that I do not belong here. It put me in a different mental state believing that I don’t belong but I have to be here, I felt that I was out of place and I did not belong in England anymore, all this really affected me mentally and wanted me to stop doing what I really love. Yunior also explains the situation as being “It’s fucking scary.” (Cheater’s guide to love). That is Borg 4 exactly how I felt because you never know what is going to happen to you, so you are always on edge waiting for the next thing to occur. Recently there was an incident against a Porto player who faced a lot of abuse towards him because of his skin color. Fans where throwing garbage bins at him and throwing banana peels at him which was very disturbing to witness, all this together led the player to cry and stick his middle finger up at the fans which I think is the right thing to do to defend yourself, however, unfortunately, the player is facing chargers such as a fine and a ban from playing in the next couple of games, which I personally think is ridiculous. Similarly, in Cheater’s guide to love society makes him very uncomfortable which makes him believe he is never safe and causes him to be depressed, “It happens again and again. Security guards follow you in stores, and every time you step onto Harvard property, you’re asked for I.D. Three times, drunk white dudes in different parts of the city try to pick fights with you.” (Cheater’s guide to love) The striker felt a similar way to Yunior, feeling that he is never going to be accepted in society and feeling that everyone he sees that is white wants to fight him. “It happens again and again” indicates that it is not only a one-time thing and the community is not doing anything to solve the problem, so society would start to believe that it is okay to carry on what they are doing. That is not the way we want the new generation to be brought up. In conclusion racism has recently played a big problem in people’s lives, affecting them in a lot of ways like not being able to follow their dreams or having to move area because of all the abuse they are getting. All this is inhumane and should not be accepted in our society. An even bigger problem is that no one is doing anything to fix the problem. There should be harsh Borg 5 punishments if someone is caught causing problems because it has put people in depression which is a very bad state of mind that has caused a lot of people to take their own lives. Post-writing My paper is mostly about racism, how I experienced racism when moving to another country to follow my dreams and how I managed to overcome the problem and deal with it myself even though it was a hard-long process. I also related it to one of the short stories we read which is called “Cheaters guide to love”. I compared how when he moved to a different state he experienced a lot of racism towards him and was always judged by society. Introduction: Give an overall background on how my life was set up and how I lived in a country with such different cultures that I grew up with no judgement. For the extended introduction I introduced my short story that I will be comparing my life with and the similarities with my story. Body: Explain how I experienced racism and how I dealt with it while trying to pursue my soccer career. Also start comparing with the short story. What I like in my essay is how I compared it with the short story and how similar my life was too him, moving to a different Borg 6 state/country and not being able to fit in. I would like to make my paper more fluent in my transitions and work on my vocabulary Conclusion: Explain how it is affecting a lot of people lives as it is affecting them mentally and stops people from pursuing their dream and emphasize how it needs to be stopped and that there has to be a solution to this. I used this quote from the short story I used and I think it is very relevant to my story because it emphasizes the problems its causing and how severe it is getting because people think they could Borg 7 get away with it, “It happens again and again” shows that people don’t stop because they think they can get away with it. It has a big impact on my essay because it is the main point in why I am writing this essay, is that people can get away with it, so society thinks its normal. When I was doing my rough draft, I was getting my thoughts out there and free writing about my life just to get it out on the paper. Once I have completed that I went over my paper again to edit it and enhance it to make it better with vocabulary, punctuation, etc.… After that I went over it again to make sure it is more fluent and makes sense. Once I uploading I waited for the comments to come back to me so I can change it even more and hopefully get the grade I desire. I would still give myself a B+ but definitely with a good amount of work needed for improvement to push that grade even greater at the start.
