The cursive is in seemingly random places, which isn’t expected. It’s also something that provokes doubt, causing someone to ask “why?” However, the character is trying to create work that makes sense to others. The two questions she asks about her work are to prevent others and herself from doubting it anymore. She doesn’t follow traditionally straight lines Again, I think the visual aspect of the work is meant to defy what the character is trying to become. In a way, this could connect to what she wants, based on how she expressed herself as a child. These two questions leave the character conflicted, so she wants to feel like a child again, which is why the comic not following traditional art “rules” makes sense. Self-expression is a safe-haven. This is partly because of the urge to not follow the rules, but also because these random elements transform from shamelessly random to… The voices in her head Represented by strange figures, the voices in her head torment her as she draws. The voices are created by self-doubt and a fear of disappointment. She is her own worst critic, which she is to protect herself from the critiques of others. However, it just makes her feel terrible about her work. What makes this worse is when the figures create an illusion of safety, like on page 6, where the little ghost figure kindly asks the character to (from my interpretation, get rid of her originality). The tone is kind until it escalates into a very angry little ghost that is throwing away the character’s work into the trash. Essentially, the voices want her to stop drawing “bad drawings” because of the fear that comes from “doing it wrong”.
