● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Sociologists (study social interaction) of physical activity focuses on the shared beliefs and social practices that constitute specific forms of physical activity (e.g., sport, exercise). Thus, sociological information enhances the breadth of knowledge of a well-educated kinesiologist. Kinesiologists with a background in sociology are aware of dominant values and ideas in competitive, leisure, and educational models of sport, as well as issues of access and control, especially in public settings for physical activity. Well-informed kinesiologists also recognize that varied social and cultural contexts exist for physical activity and that different forms of sport, exercise, and recreational activity may be assigned different values across time and cultural groups.
