SWANSON'S THEORY OF CARING Kristen Swanson is one of the nursing theorists who have positively impacted healthcare with her theory of caring. She was born on January 13, 1953, in Rhode Island. She is currently the Seattle University College of Nursing dean. She had Dr. Jean Watson as her mentor when she completed her doctorate ultimately influenced her desire to study the concept of caring related to healthcare. Kristen Swanson has conducted research studies funded by the National Institutes of Nursing Research. Swanson's Theory of Caring has brought evidence-based nursing practice that positively affects patient care. The nursing metaparadigm comprises four distinct concepts: person, environment health, and nursing (Butt & Rich, 2015). Kristen Swanson's theory promotes the incorporation of caring into patient care. She used five essential processes to explain the caring theory: maintaining belief, knowing, being with, doing for, and enabling. She wrote that maintaining belief is the nurse's ability to have faith in patients during their health challenges. Knowing: she describes it as the nurse's acknowledgment that the patient has substance and purpose in life. It is essential to have the patient be involved in matters related to their care. Being: explains the physical and emotional availability of the care provider to the patient. Doing for: requires the nurse to help the patient retain their dignity. Last and not the least is Enabling: which helps patients make life transitions and come to a place of selfactualization. Rationale for Selection Caring serves as the foundation for nursing practice. An advanced practice nurse must incorporate the Swanson theory of caring and healing. The reason for selecting Swanson's caring theory is that it is an evidence-based theory, empathetic patient-directed care, and has improved the level of interaction and support provided to patients. Caring is one of the core traits a nurse should have to deliver superior quality healthcare (Welch & Fournier, 2018). The five caring processes should serve as a foundation to establish that advanced nurse practitioners provide complete healthcare that fosters a caring environment that decreases worry, enhances the broad healthcare experience, and rewards job performance for the provider. The first part of the presentation will use a descriptive diagram to explain the overall concept of the Swanson theory. The second part of the presentation will show the structural diagram of the caring theory, and the last part will show and explain the modification of Swanson's theory for advanced nursing practice.
