DEFINITION OF PUBLIC COMMUNICATION PUBLIC COMMUNICATION - Public communication happens when individuals and groups engage in dialogue in the public sphere in order to deliver a message to a specific audience. Public speaking events, newspaper editorials and billboard advertisements are a few forms of public communication. It is one of the crucial forms of communication, usually done for a specific purpose. PURPOSES OF COMMUNICATION 1. INFORMATIVE COMMUNICATION - With informative communication, the speaker tries to disclose an idea to the public. It generally focuses on talking about people, events, processes, places, or things. The main objective of an informative communication is to provide information regarding a specific topic the audience knows nothing about. 2. PERSUASIVE COMMUNICATION - The act of presenting arguments to move, motivate, or change your audience is called persuasion. The persuasive purpose is used to convince, or persuade, the reader that the opinion, or assertion, or claim, of the writer is correct or valid. Persuasive communication requires a practicing voice that convinces the public from a perspective. For example, when politicians need votes for elections, they choose this kind of Public Communication to win the group’s confidence with an appeal. 3. ENTERTAINMENT COMMUNICATION - In broad terms, an entertaining speech is a speech designed to captivate an audience’s attention and regale or amuse them while delivering a message. Remember, when we use the word “entertain,” we are referring not just to humor but also to drama. The goal of an entertaining speech is to stir an audience’s emotions.
