Columbian Exchange Activity Step 1: Answer the following questions in complete sentences – do not copy and paste, write in your own words. 1. What was the most devastating impact of the Columbian Exchange? What made it so devastating to the natives? About how many Americans were in America in 1492? What percent died? The most devastating impact where the unnumerable plagues that caused immense deaths. All the different viruses that Christopher Columbus brought and his crew from Europe. 40 to 60 Million Americans where in America in 1492, And 90% of the first Americans died. 2. How did the disease epidemic help lead to slavery in the Americas? 3. What crops did Columbus and his followers bring to the New World? The crops that Columbus and his followers introduced where, wheat, plantains, barley 4. What crops became foundations of the slave trade (there should be four of them)? Tobacco, sugar, cotton, rice 5. Which domesticated animals did Eurasia bring to the Americas? Which one had the biggest impact? Why? The main ones where llamas, alpaca, dogs, turkeys and guinea pigs and the one with the biggest impact was the horse because the horse was one of easiest animals to domesticate they with it they could hunt animals with ease. 6. What impact did cattle have on the Americas? The impact was very good because it left a lot of profits and it revolutionized biological economic and social evolution in the Americas. 7. How did maize impact the Old World? Maize converted to be the principal food of south Africa it was used as food for animals and for humans, it could be eaten as a porridge or bread. 8. How did the potato impact the old world? How did it help lead to the industrial revolution? When Germany, Poland and Russia accepted the potato it helped them drive a general population explosion in Europe. That population explosion laid the foundation for world shaking developments. When humans started domesticating animals the diseases that usually were transferred to other animals started transferring to humans and humans started getting sick. Examples of diseases that came to humans from animals are: Measles, smallpox, influenza, diphtheria and many more. 3. How do populations build up resistances to diseases? They build up resistance to diseases depending on the genes of each person and if most of the people get sick someone has a gene that can combat that disease and they can reproduce and give that gene to their children again and again 4. What did Robert de La Salle’s travels show us about the impact of diseases that Hernando de Soto brought? the voyages of Robert de La Salle and Hernando de Soro they showed a great impact on the population because smallpox arrived in the sixteenth century and at the end of the seventeenth century the population grew rapidly and this created the conditions for an epidemic 5. Create a magazine or newspaper advertisement for the potato or for the horse. If you choose the potato, introduce it to the Europeans of the early 1500s. If you select the horse, advertise it to the people of the Americas at that time. Include a catchy slogan. Remember that the purpose of the ad is to sell something, so focus on the benefits of the product. You can do it on the back of the chart or wherever you wish (on computer, other paper, etc.) 2. Focus again on the history of the potato and the horse. Write a paragraph answering the question: What do a potato and a horse have in common?
