Introduction to Individualism The ramifications and political significance of the term "the person," which is so frequently employed in ordinary speech, are frequently disregarded. An person is a single human being, to put it simply. However, the idea implies something more. First of all, it suggests that each individual human being is a distinct, autonomous being with a purpose and identity of their own. In other words, speaking of people as individuals implies that they act independently rather than as part of a social group or collective body and are autonomous beings. Second, people are not just independent, but also distinctive, if not unique. This is what the term "individuality," which refers to what is unique and different about each and every human being, implies, for instance. Therefore, to understand society as a collection of individuals is to understand people on a personal level and to evaluate them based on their unique traits, such as character, personality, abilities, skills, and so forth. Every person has a unique identity. Third, accepting that all people, regardless of location, have some underlying features with one another is usually necessary in order to understand humans as individuals. In this perspective, persons are characterized by their moral worth, individuality, and uniqueness rather than by their social background, ethnicity, religion, gender, or any other "accident of birth." One of the pillars of Western political culture is the idea of the individual. Despite the fact that the phrase has been in use since the seventeenth century, it is now so widely used that it is constantly taken for granted. But the idea of the individual has also sparked intense ideological conflict and intellectual disagreement. What does it mean, for instance, to be committed to individualism and to believe in the individual? Does individualism require a particular political philosophy or can it be applied to a variety of stances and ideologies? Furthermore, no political thinker believes that an individual is totally self-sufficient; rather, they all agree that, to some extent, the individual is supported and influenced by social elements. Individualism is more than just a belief in the existence of people. Instead, it alludes to a view that the individual is the center of any political theory or social explanation, placing the individual above any social organization or collective body. Individualism does not, however, clearly have a political aspect. Although it has frequently been associated with the classical liberal tradition and concepts like limited government and the free market, it has also occasionally been accepted by socialists and used to defend state intervention. Individual aims can only be achieved through communal effort, according to some theorists, who consider individuality and collectivism as polar opposites and the classic front lines in the conflict between capitalism and socialism. The issue is that there is no consensus over what constitutes a "individual." Therefore, the variety of perspectives on the nature of human nature may be seen in the shapes that individualism has taken. All individualist ideologies uphold the inherent worth of the person, highlighting the dignity, individual worth, and even holiness of every person. They disagree, however, on the best way to realize these attributes. The idea of natural rights, which maintained that the goal of social structure was to defend each person's unalienable rights, was how early liberals articulated their individualism. According to social contract theory, for example, which holds that government only exists to protect individuals' rights, it is a sort of political individualism that derives from the consent of the people. However, this kind of individualism might have libertarian and even anarchist consequences if taken to its logical conclusion. For instance, American individualists of the nineteenth century like Henry David Thoreau (1817–62) and Benjamin Tucker (1854–1939) held that no person should sacrifice his or her conscience to the judgment of politicians, whether elected or not. This viewpoint rejects the idea that the government can ever have legitimate authority over an individual. This individualist, anti-statist tradition has strong ties to those who support market capitalism. Such individualism has typically been predicated on the premise that people are independent and self-interested. This was dubbed "possessive individualism" by C.B. Macpherson in 1973, which he defined as "a notion of the individual as basically the proprietor of his own person or capacities, owing nothing to society for them." Economic individualism and the right to private property, or the freedom to own, use, and dispose of property as one sees fit, are inextricably intertwined if people are fundamentally selfish and prioritize their own interests over those of others or society. As a result, for those who adored laissez-faire capitalism, individuality became an article of faith, particularly in the UK and the USA. According to this viewpoint, laws that govern economic and social life by establishing pay standards, dictating the duration of the workday, meddling with working conditions, or instituting benefits and pensions pose a threat to individualism. But sometimes quite diverse conclusions have been made from the individualistic philosophy. For instance, modern liberals like L.T. Hobhouse (1864-1929) and T.H. Green (see p. 30) used individualism to support social welfare and government action. They perceived the person as socially responsible and capable of having an altruistic concern for other people rather than as being purely self-interested. Their main objective was to promote what J.S. Mill had referred to as "individuality," or the capacity for each person to find fulfillment and realize whatever potential they may have. As a result, individualism changed from being a theology of personal avarice to a philosophy of personal growth; egotistical individualism was replaced by developmental individualism. Because of this, contemporary liberals are ready to support government initiatives meant to advance equality of opportunity and shield people from the social ills that mar their lives, such unemployment, poverty, and ignorance.
