Exam #3 Up to Ch.17 (includes ligands) Chapter 19/Chapter 17 Bidentate ligands: 2 lone pairs on the molecule on the same side of the molecule Special ligands: Chelating agents: extract metal ions and release them with the addition of acid Polydentate ligands: Very strong complexation with multiply charged metal cations Binding is pH-dependent Need to deprotonate carboxylate groups Chelate effect: polydentate (chelating) ligands form much more stable complexes than monodentate ligands (entropic effect) Examples of dentate molecules: Monodentate Bidentate Tridentate Tetradentate Pentadentate Hexadentate Properties of Solution: Water has strong covalent bonds of strong hydrogen bonds Need energy to break solvent molecules High boiling point & high surface tension Ion-dipole interactions in water are strong Larger the charge & smaller the radius, greater the affinity for water Net energy change is small
