II. Systems of Equations DEPENDENT SYSTEMS (Ch. 7-287-3) recall that a dependent system has has infinitely many solutions a system is dependent because two of the unknown quantities can only be found if the third is known. In other words, x and y are dependent on the value of z. ex. For the following dependent system, describe the solutions in terms of z. [{\begin{matrix}x+y+z+7\ 2x-y-4z=5\ x+2y+3z+10\end{matrix}] Step1 pick one of the equations and solve for x or y \[x+y+z=7\] \[x=-y-z\cdot7\] step 2: Substitute \(x=-y-z-7\) for one of the other equations and solve for y \[y-z+7+2y+3z=10\] \[y=-2z+3\] step 3 substitute \(y=-2z+3\) for \(x=-y-z\cdot7\) \[x=-(-2z+3)-z-7\] \[x=2z-3-z-7\] \[x=z+4\] Solution: \((z+4,\cdot2z+3,z)\)
