Distribution Shape: Number of Modes The number of local peaks shown by the histogram can be: One (unimodal) Many (multimodal) None (uniform) Examples: Unimodal: One peak Bimodal: Two peaks Multimodal: Multiple peaks Uniform: No peaks Symmetry and Asymmetry We distinguish symmetry and asymmetry. Asymmetry (skewness) can have two different directions: right (positive) and left (negative). The direction of symmetry is given by the position of the longest tail. Examples: Symmetry: The left and right tails are approximately the same length. Asymmetry right: The right tail is longer. Asymmetry left: The left tail is longer. Mean vs. Median In a symmetric distribution, the mean and median are approximately equal. In a right-skewed distribution, the mean is greater than the median.
