Ocean pollution is a serious issue and creatively recycling is an extremely effective way to combat it. A report issued by Plastic Ocean International says that 300 million tons of plastic is produced globally every year. Half of that plastic is used for disposable items that will only be used once. (Facts. About Plastic. Help – Plastic Oceans Foundation.) According to Jim Leape, co-director of the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions, there is an estimated 150 million metric tons of plastic in the ocean, and 8 million tons are added each year. (Jordan, Rob) With the projection of how the world is in its current, I’d wager that our future could look similar to the movie Wall-E, where humans shuttled rubbish into space. Well, instead of launching plastics into space, why don’t we repurpose them here on Earth?
Hello, my name is Kaydence-Lee Woolsey and today my team and I are going to tell you about our revolutionary product and service called, “Seas The Day Jewelry”. Our business takes donated plastics or plastics washed up on the beach and turns them into beads and jewelry products.
This can be extremely beneficial to know because we believe that everyone should be aware of a service that not only would actively collect plastic waste but also repurposes it in a manner that can be fashionable and even trendy.
We have done a considerable amount of research and have deeply integrated ourselves into making the possibility of less plastic waste in our world a reality.
In the next few minutes, my team and I are going to convince you that you need Seas The Day Jewelry. First, Malie and I will talk about the problem of ocean pollution. Second, Chris will talk about the solution our jewelry solves and the process of making them. Finally, Stephanie will discuss the many benefits of using Seas The Day Jewelry and will tell you how to get it.
Pollution has caused many problems in our ocean and has the potential to negatively impact human life, so much so that our marine life is in danger. Here is Malie to talk more:
Malie: Thanks, Kaydence.
By 2050 scientists estimate the plastics in the ocean will outweigh all of the ocean’s fish. (Facts. About Plastic. Help – Plastic Oceans Foundation) According to the Center for Biological Diversity, there is a huge patch of debris floating in the North Pacific region of the Pacific Ocean called: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Fish in the North Pacific ingest 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic a year. This then leads to internal injury or death to the fish. These fish are then eaten by larger fish and then we the people who eat fish also eat the plastic. (Center for Biological Diversity) Professor Brendan Godley conducted a global survey and found that thousands of sea turtles die every year after becoming entangled. (Godley, Brendan) While marine life is in danger from all the plastic in our ocean, it is evident that human ingestion of plastic could lead to far worse consequences for the human race.
People are being negatively affected by ocean pollution. More and more we begin to see the effects of plastic and the improper disposal of plastic leading us toward serious health concerns. The Washington Post heads an article written by consumer reports on the effects of microplastic humans are consuming. According to consumer reports, Americans ingest at least 74,000 microplastic particles every year. (Reports, Consumer) In addition, Pete Myers, founder and chief scientist of the nonprofit Environmental Health Sciences and an adjunct professor of chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University, from Washington Post’s consumer reports article states that further ingestion leads to harmful chemicals like bisphenol and phthalates that can affect our digestive and reproductive organs. Some chemicals, like Styrene, in plastic can even lead to hearing loss, nervous system problems, and even cancer. Microplastic ingestion is the real issue and it is caused by the fact that less than 10% of the 8 billion of plastic from the 1950s have been recycled. (Reports, Consumer)
Malie: Now that I’ve told you a little bit about the problem, here’s Chris, to tell you more about how our jewelry is created.
Chris: Thanks, Malie.
Before I start describing the steps that each and every one of us can take part in, I want to talk about some studies I came across while doing my own research that brings a little more light into the importance of our products. A 2017 study in the Journal of Mechanical Design revealed that people were more willing to buy green if a product highlighted sustainable features, which appealed to consumers’ environmental consciousness. A 2015 Nielsen report found 45 percent of global respondents were willing to pay more for an environmentally friendly product, and 41 percent were willing to pay more for environmentally friendly packaging. (Morgan, Rick) Repurposing trash is a popular way to make an impact. Some ways can be very self-explanatory that we can take part in, first, we accept plastic waste donations from local sources, we have a mandatory bi-weekly, 2 hours, beach clean up with all workers at a different beach each time, and even accepts volunteer, we make sure that the material is not toxic and recyclable, and we make sure to take full responsibility of limiting plastic use (for example bringing our own reusable water bottles). Another way that is known to be one of the most effective to lessen plastic in the Ocean, is to use less plastic in the first place. Lastly, investing our time to educate people on how important it is to take part in reducing or limiting plastic use. We can help by taking part in our actions and setting good examples for the youth by showing them some ways that are also beneficial to them; accessories.
The process differs depending on the types of plastic and jewelry we will create. We decided to generalize to you how we create our Seas The Day Jewelry: First, we collect plastics of any variation either donated or collected during our bi-weekly beach service clean-ups. Second, we separate the different kinds of plastic due to the different melting temperatures and textures. Thirdly, we melt the plastic down safely in our recreational ovens. Next, we reshape the melted plastic in a mold. Additionally, we sand down or shave off the excess that will later be reused or remelted with other plastic. Next, we make proper adjustments to accommodate making jewelry. And finally, we name it, for a personal touch. (Lenkiewicz, Zoë)
Chris: Now that you know the solution and the process of how we make our Seas The Day Jewelry, Stephanie is going to tell you about all the benefits your (and your loved ones) will experience as a result of our product/service.
Steph: Thanks, Chris! I adore how our jewelry is not only beautiful to look at and comfortable to wear, but it also is a major step in fighting ocean pollution and increasing education in what can be thrown out, what can be recycled, and ocean cleanliness. As Kaydence and Maile stated, there is a lot of trash in our oceans as we can prove by the fact that the million-ton Great Pacific Garbage Patch exists. Most of the trash accumulated in the Texas-sized patch between Hawaii and California comes from countries in the Pacific Rim. (Rice, Doyle)
Our jewelry uses plastics that are typically washed up onto the beach or found in plastic bags which means that there are fewer plastics in our oceans to harm wildlife and destroy ecosystems. The destruction of wildlife and ecosystems can, in turn, lead to a path that is destructive to the human race itself. Furthermore, recycled plastic doesn’t just offer a more sustainable solution, it is a material that is often free to source and can be produced in a wide range of colors, patterns, and textures. (Frearson, Amy)
Our beautiful pieces can be used to easily bring up the topic of ocean pollution and incorrect recycling habits. Our website offers a convenient location to easily order our jewelry and houses a plethora of information on ocean pollution and proper recycling habits. Furthermore, we have a map of where our local donation spots are and which beaches we are attending in our bi-weekly beach clean-ups. Utilizing the plastic from beaches leads to a better environment for marine life and people, as well as minimizes the temptation for people to litter simply because trash is already there.
The added benefit for you, other than the fact that the Earth is becoming a little greener, is a beautiful, timeless piece of jewelry that can be worn for almost any occasion! Not buying our product ensures there is more plastic being thrown away or improperly disposed of and pollutes our ocean, causing an increasingly worse environment for marine life, eventually leading to worsening environments. Furthermore, you don’t have a rocking piece of jewelry to show off to all of your friends and family! What are you waiting for?! Listen closely for a special introductory offer that WON’T last long.
