Prof.Öznur DEMİR ORDU • Nineteenth-century chemists classified hydrocarbons as either aliphatic or aromatic on the basis of their sources and properties. • Hydrocarbons are the principal constituents of petroleum and natural gas. They serve as fuels and lubricants as well as raw materials for the production of plastics, fibres, rubbers, solvents, explosives, and industrial chemicals. Assoc. Prof.Öznur DEMİR ORDU Other alkanes • Several of higher-molecular weight alkanes, begining with pentane, are liquids and are the major components of gasoline. • Larger alkanes are oily or greasy liquids or waxy solids (i.e.candle wax) at room temperature. Prof.Öznur DEMİR ORDU Ethylene in nature • Many fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruit and tomatoes release ethylene as they ripen. This speeds further ripening. • Some fruit produce ethylene as ripening begins. Apples and pears are examples of fruit that produce ethylene with ripening. Ethylene is responsible for the changes in texture, softening, color, and other processes involved in ripening. Assoc. Prof.Öznur DEMİR ORDU RIPENING • Commercial growers sometimes use this phenomenon to accelerate the maturation of fruit and vegetables. • Ethylene gas is used commercially to ripen tomatoes, bananas, pears, and a few other fruits postharvest. Prof.Öznur DEMİR ORDU • Toluene, also known as toluol, is a substituted aromatic hydrocarbon. • It is a colorless, water-insoluble liquid with the smell associated with paint thinners. It is used in some types of paint thinner, permanent markers, contact cement and certain types of glue Assoc. Prof.Öznur DEMİR ORDU • The xylenes are used in making dyes, insecticides and drugs. This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect. • The primary greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. Assoc.
