Increases electrolyte and water secretion into colon. Therapeutic Use Prevention of constipation and straining at stool. Can be used rectally to soften fecal impaction. Complications Mild cramps, throat irritation, rashes. Medication Administration PO: 50-400 mg in divided doses Contraindications/Precautions Fecal impaction; hypersensitivity to docusate salts or their components; intestinal obstruction; nausea, vomiting, or other symptoms of appendicitis Interactions Nursing Interventions Do not give within 2 hours of other laxatives, especially mineral oil. Oral liquid is more palatable if diluted or mixed with juice. Mineral oil: Increased mineral oil absorption, increased risk of toxicity Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Regular bowel function and evacuation Should be used for short term only and may take time to work. Choose foods to enhance elimination. Never use when abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever exists.
