All active vocabulary as listed in the syllabus
Using есть (with nominative) and нет (with genitive) to express possession and existence (see also
the handout on Blackboard for this)
Using в + prepositional (with places or institutions) and у + genitive (for people) to discuss
possession
Using б²л(ŧ, о, и) and нš было (+ gen.) to discuss possession in the past, or áóäåò/áóäóò and íå
áóäåò (+ gen.) to discuss possession in the future.
Omitting åñòü in present tense possession statements when there is an adjective that puts the
emphasis on what kind of thing is possessed rather than whether it is possessed: Ó Êåâèíà åñòü
ìàøèíà vs. Ó Êåâèíà êðàñíàÿ ìàøèíà.
Putting í- before åãî, å¸, and èõ when used with a preposition (ó íåãî, ó íå¸, ó íèõ), except when
used as possessive pronouns: ó íå¸ åñòü vs. ó å¸ áðàòà åñòü.
Forming the imperative of verbs (see also handout on Blackboard). Remember that stems with
stressed final vowels end in -ė(òå) (ãîâîðė! ïèøė!), stems with unstressed final vowels end in
–ü(òå) (îòâšòü! ãîòžâü!), and stems ending in –é keep their –é(òå) ending (÷èòŧé! îòêðžé! ðèñŸé!).
Follow the stress as it appears in the infinitive, and include any consonant mutation that applies to
all present tense forms (not ÿ only): ïèøė! ñêàæė! ðèñŸé!
Be careful of aspect in the imperative: it usually works the same as aspect in the indicative
(consider repetition, completion, etc), but note that negative imperatives are almost always in the
imperfective (íå ÷èòàé!)
Know the conjugations and imperfective/perfective forms of new verbs: ìî÷ü/ñìî÷ü, çâàòü
(âûçâàòü), íà÷èíàòü/íà÷àòü, ïîíèìàòü/ïîíÿòü, îòêðûâàòü/îòêðûòü, çàêðûâàòü/çàêðûòü,
äàâàòü/äàòü
Know the endings for the irregular nouns èìÿ and âðåìÿ (especially genitive)
Know the endings for short-form adjectives used as predicates (áîëåí, çäîðîâ, ñâîáîäåí; notice
that the –e- in áîëåí/ñâîáîäåí drops out with other endings (áîëüíŧ, ñâîážäíû)
Know how to use the ending –ñÿ/-ñü with verbs like ó÷èòüñÿ: -ñÿ after consonants and –ñü after
vowels.
Know how to use ïî+ dative to say “in” or “on” academic fields or disciplines: ñïåöèàëèñò ïî
ýêîíîìèêå, êóðñ ïî ðóññêîé èñòîðèè, ýêçàìåí ïî ôðàíöóçñêîìó ÿçûêó, or “on” or “by” a
medium: ïî òåëåôîíó, ïî òåëåâèçîðó. Remember that feminine nouns ending in -èÿ have the
dative ending –èè (ïî õèìèè). Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the underlined verb. Pay attention to the appropriate aspect
(which may not be the same as the underlined form), tense, gender, imperative or indicative mood,
conjugation, etc. Remember to mark stresses!
