Growing Pains: The New Republic, 1790-1820 The Caribbean Legacy of the French Revolution There have been slave rebellions in the Caribbean since the French Revolution, such as the 1791 insurrection in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (modern-day Haiti). This is in contrast to the American Revolution, which eventually served to reinforce the institution of slavery and the privileges of American slaveholders. A vast number of enslaved individuals banded together to topple the cruel institution of slavery. They seized possession of a sizable portion of the island, setting fire to sugar fields and murdering the White people who had made them work as slaves. Following the abolition of slavery in the French Empire in 1794, Spain and England launched attacks on Saint- Domingue in an attempt to annexe the province to their own empires. After being set free from slavery at birth, Toussaint L'Ouverture became the main figure in the struggle against Spain and England to establish a free Haiti and advance European colonization. Toussaint allied himself with France because revolutionary France had outlawed slavery, intending to stave off interference from Spain and England. The political backstabbing in the US was made more difficult by the events in Haiti. Along with enslaved and free people of color, white refugee planters fled the Caribbean for the United States and Louisiana, which was then under Spanish control. They came from Haiti and other French West Indian islands. Fears that these French immigrants would spread radicalism from France to the United States were particularly strong among Federalists. Additionally, southern White people and slaveholders were horrified by the notion that the French Revolution would serve as the model for a successful slave revolt just offshore of the United States.
