This was largely caused by the hostility that northern voters had grown to President Johnson as a result of his rigid and domineering demeanor while in the White House and his gaffes during his 1866 speaking tour. legislator Thaddeus Stevens of Pennsylvania and Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, who had been beaten with a cane by pro-slavery South Carolina legislator Preston Brooks during the Bleeding Kansas crisis in 1856, were two of the leading radical Republicans in Congress. The revolution these men and their allies envisioned for the South would be far more widespread. While many people in the South were denied the ability to vote, Sumner supported voting rights for Black males and school integration. Stevens, on his part, believed that when the southern states seceded, they lost their status as states and became conquered land that the federal government could use anyway it pleased. In his view, the former Confederacy would be under US military rule and plantation estates would be redistributed. One of their objectives was to convert the South from a region dependent on slave labor to one based on free labor. They also wished to provide the safety and chance for a better life for those who had been set free. The second phase of Reconstruction, which started in 1867, was made more urgent by the violent race riots that occurred in Memphis, Tennessee, and New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1866. Reconstruction, which lasted from 1865 to 1877, is regarded as one of the most important eras in American history. An important turning point was the introduction of Radical Reconstruction between 1867 and 1872, which was motivated by the ardent efforts of radical Republicans in Congress. In the fall of 1866, the Republican Party made significant election gains, partly because of voters' rising resentment of President Andrew Johnson in the North. Many had grown disenchanted with Johnson because of his unyielding attitude and his string of missteps during his 1866 speaking tour. Among the well-known individuals spearheading the radical Republican movement were Charles Sumner of Massachusetts and Thaddeus Stevens of Pennsylvania. During the Bleeding Kansas conflict in 1856, Sumner, who was notoriously struck with a cane by pro-slavery South Carolina politician Preston Brooks, fervently supported school integration and Black males' right to vote. Stevens, on the other hand, had a bold idea of what the southern states should be like when they seceded. He said that the southern states lost their ability to exist as states when they seceded and instead became conquered territory under federal control. According to Stevens' plan, plantation properties would be redistributed and the former Confederate states would be subject to direct military authority. The radical Republicans' goal was to replace the South's reliance on slave labor with free labor, and this was a key component of their plan. Their goal was to break down the social and economic systems that had supported slavery and give the freedmen the chance to improve their own lives. This includes programs like schooling opportunities and land redistribution. The advent of deadly racial riots in 1866 in places like Memphis, Tennessee, and New Orleans, Louisiana, highlighted the importance of their goal. The unstable and unstable state of racial relations in the South after World War II was brought to light by these events, which strengthened radical Republicans' resolve to implement significant changes. The second phase of Reconstruction featured a greater emphasis on reshaping the South and began in 1867. Congress enacted the Reconstruction Acts, which separated the former Confederate states into military districts, each ruled by a Union general. These military officials were in charge of ensuring that freedmen's civil rights were protected and supervising the transfer to civilian rule. Congress also ordered these states to design new constitutions that guaranteed Black males the right to vote and ratified the Fourteenth Amendment, which gave all Americans who were born or naturalized in the country citizenship and equal protection under the law. Nonetheless, there were significant obstacles to the extreme Reconstruction program. Resentful of the changes being forced upon them, Southern whites participated in a broad campaign of resistance that included acts of violence and intimidation directed at Black people and their supporters. During Reconstruction, the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist groups proved to be fierce foes, working to undo the accomplishments of African Americans and reinstate white supremacy in the South. The federal government found it difficult to implement its objectives in the face of such opposition, and by the early 1870s, support for radical Reconstruction had started to decline. Radical Reconstruction was an audacious attempt to confront the history of slavery and racial inequity in America, even if it was eventually implemented incompletely. Its influence would linger, influencing the ongoing discussion about what freedom and equality mean in American culture and serving as a springboard for subsequent civil rights movements.
