President Lincoln took swift action to bring the nation back together, which was the war's main objective. Republicans in Congress objected, arguing that the president's plan was too forgiving to the rebel states that had split the nation apart. Instead, he offered a generous and non-punitive plan to quickly reunify the former Confederate states with the United States. This viewpoint held that the biggest problem with Lincoln's proposal was that it seemed to reward traitors rather than granting civil rights to those who had been slaves. Although he did not survive to see the Thirteenth Amendment ratified, President Lincoln supervised its passage and outlawed slavery. The crucial years of American history known as Reconstruction, which lasted from 1865 to 1877, were defined by attempts to rebuild the Union following the Civil War. The Southern states, which had broken away from the Union during the war, began the process of reconstruction by attempting to re-join the country. After leading the Union through the turmoil of the war, President Abraham Lincoln did not hesitate to take action to bring the broken country back together. Lincoln aimed to speed up the Southern states' readmission into the Union rather than taking punitive action against them in order to promote healing and togetherness in the nation that had been devastated by war. Critics countered that Lincoln's strategy failed to give priority to the promotion of civil rights for African Americans who had been slaves and instead ran the possibility of rewarding those who had committed traitorous acts against the Union. In the face of ingrained prejudice and opposition from Southern governments, African Americans continued to battle for their rights and liberties during the Reconstruction era. Reconstruction was not without its flaws and complications, but its legacy lives on as a tribute to the fortitude and tenacity of those who strove to create a society that was more just and equal. Reconstruction arose as a testing ground where the principles of democracy and equality were put to the test and confirmed as the country struggled with the fallout from the war and the tremendous changes brought about by liberation. The lessons that were learnt during this critical period will continue to influence American history in the years to come, influencing the ongoing fight for social justice and civil rights.
