Mass manufacturing promoted new sectors and enhanced mobility, particularly in the case of the vehicle. As firms expanded to accommodate this increasing demand, unemployment fell precipitously. Cities kept expanding, and the 1920 census found that most people resided in metropolitan regions with 25,000 or more inhabitants. New dances, speakeasies, cinemas, and jazz music ruled the urban nightlife. Many Catholic recent immigrants from southern and eastern Europe were now active in the political system. This put rural Protestant fundamentalism to the test, even as quota rules attempted to control new patterns of immigration. The Ku Klux Klan gained prominence because of their opposition to the expanding numbers of immigrants, Catholics, and Jews in America, as well as the evolving role of African Americans. The decade was dubbed the "Roaring Twenties" or the "Jazz Age" due to a confluence of social, political, economic, and cultural upheaval and strife; the following artwork, which appeared on the front of F.
