The Conquest of San Borondón Chronologically, the second capitulation that Alonso Luis Fernández de Lugo tried to achieve would lead him to achieve the conquest of San Borondón, one more island to be added to those conquered by his grandfather: Memorial addressed to S.C.C.M. (Charles V) of the Adelantado of the Canary Islands, in which he says that he begged Your Majesty to grant him permission so that he could discover and conquer for him and its capitals the island they call San Blandon and to populate it for himself and for his descendants and successors with what is in them populated and to be populated, with civil and criminal jurisdiction merely mixed and with all the breasts with services and uses, that there were and could be in it. Your Majesty ordered that the capitulation that was made with the one who discovered and won the islands of the Canary Islands be shown, and what there is about this has been seen by those of your Council of Chambers, through the chronicles of King Don Juan II and of the Indies, so that it seems that the first who discovered the said islands of the Canary Islands, he was granted the title of king, with which he was subject to the crown of Castile, and afterwards other things happened, as appears from the said chronicles. Beg V... Do him mercy as he has asked and supplied, and in this he will do him mercy. (On the back: for the time being it is not a business that should be discussed).21 This Memorial, undated, could be dated to the years 1540 and 1541, when Alonso Luis Fernández de Lugo was in Tenerife. In 1540, for example, he wrote to the Chamber of Castile about the possibility of approaching Barbary with the purpose of obtaining black slaves for his sugar mills in Tenerife and La Palma.22 On the other hand, Don Antonio Rumeu tells us that a new expedition to Africa by the third Adelantado of the Canary Islands could be dated to 1541. following the information of Viera y Clavijo and Manuel de Ossuna and Van-denHeede.23 We can give these two dates as possible, but what is certain is that the expedition was not carried out because the monarch did not favor the enterprise, not so much because he did not believe in it, but because of lack of means. What does catch our attention about this memorial of the conquest of San Borondón is that in this request, the Adelantado returns to the type of enterprise that his grandfather undertook in the conquests of Tenerife and La Palma,24 and without any affinity with the one presented for the conquest of Santa Marta, from which it can be deduced that the third Adelantado used different approaches at each time and for each area: for San Borondón as the Canary Islands and for Santa Marta as the capitulations that were drawn up in Seville.
