The Biblical Donation The first fruits at this point exhibit a high degree of consistency in their recipients but a high degree of fluctuation in their rate, echoing the biblical giving of the first fruits to the priests. The local clergy is almost always the beneficiary, sometimes providing justification for the collection of the right by administering the sacraments.l The rate varies from one bushel per harvester and grain planted (as occurs in areas where the cereal harvest was virtually nonexistent) to six or more bushels per grower and sown species, with each grower being responsible for the cost of each grain he sows, even in cases where the harvest is short or even lost. However, there are some locations where payment is only made upon the achievement of a specific volume of harvest.17 Some regions have also developed fixed first-fruiting practices that are unconnected to harvesting, when each neighbor hosting an open house contributes a certain quantity of bushels of grain, sometimes half wheat and half barley, sometimes wheat and rye. To give an example, consider this: in Gete, where the aforementioned site is located, each farmer gathers "four bushels of each type of bread he takes"; in Atienza, which is now Guadalajara, Soria in 1752, the harvesters gather "half a fanega of each species of grain for each harvester," or six bushels.
