Caribbean plants The connections between the Canary Islands and the Caribbean flora as a whole are significant, but their significance decreases significantly if we focus only on Antillean species. The majority of American plants that have been included into Canarian ethnobotanical tradition have come from the Caribbean, particularly Cuba and Puerto Rico; nevertheless, many of these plants originally came from Yucatan, the coast of Venezuela, etc. This is due to the extremely quick proliferation of several flora during pre-Columbian periods. In this sense, flora from throughout the American continent are found in the Caribbean by European settlers. The sweet potato is the best illustration of this interaction. In America, the term "caboto" refers to sweet potatoes (Corrales Zumbado et al., 1996, s.v.). The documentation of its existence within the Archipelago dates back to 1556, when Thomas Nichols lists it as a product of the Islands of Gran Canaria and Madeira (Cioranescu, 1963, p. IIO). A few years later, in 1590, Gran Canaria exported it to Seville (Lobo Cabrera, 1988, p. 130). According to Belgian Jules Leclera (1990, p. SI), the sweet potato first appears as a staple meal in the Canarian stew in 1879. The canary stew it is made up of a chunk of boiling lamb or beef. Served with potatoes, yams, sweet potatoes, and chickpeas Its cultivation continues to this day, with an immense variety of crops still growing in our fields, some of which may be of great commercial and historical interest (Gil González, 1997, p. 103) Not in vain, this tuber often enabled us to survive periods of famine brought on by poor cereal harvests, as a British physician named G. Staunton (1995, p. 82) tells us in 1792: The people were not fed. but of sweet potato bread and salted fish, which is brought from the coast of Africa or brought from North America [...) As previously mentioned, on its return from its second journey, the sweet potato was carried from America to the Iberian Peninsula, where it quickly expanded over Andalusia and Aragon (Viera and Clavijo, 1982, p. 71)
