M2 Describe barriers to effective communication in the two interactions Identify the barrier by highlighting or underlining it. A relative who is very angry or upset A nursery child with a hearing disability An elderly resident who has sight disability A consultant or doctor who has an accent because their first language is not English. A social worker who uses: Jargon Slang When talking in a meeting that involves nonspecialist people. A nurse, nursery nurse or care worker who speaks in a strong local dialect. Describe how the barrier prevents effective communication in an interaction of meeting In my one to one communication if the parent becomes very angry I overcome this by talking calmly and respectfully ensuring the parents that I understand how they feel making them feel like they have my trust which will eventually calm them down. If the brother of Mrs. Dennis became very angry in our group role play I would have, stop talking and allow him to finish what he is saying. After he has completed, I will then speak which will give him a sign that I had listened to him without interrupting and now it is his turn to listen and not interrupt. If I have to speak to a child with hearing difficulties in a nursery I would use sign language to help the child understand what is being said. If I had to act out a 1:1 role play that included an elderly resident who has sight impairment I would have overcome this barrier by gently and slowly talking to make sure the person understands and is aware of the matter. If something was to be written, I would make sure it is in braille as the blind person would recognise it and understand it easily. In my group role play if the consultant or doctor had an accent because their first language is not English, I would have overcome this barrier by talking with a slow pace and a fixed tone so the other person understands what is being said. However, if the person does not understand at all, an interpreter would be required in order to send the message clearly across to the client. In my group role play if the social worker used jargon or slang in the meeting this barrier could have been overcome by decreasing the pace and talking in a fixed tone helping the other people understand it much better. In my 1:1 role play if the nursery nurse spoke in a strong local dialect I would have overcome this by asking them to repeat what they have said but with a slow pace in order for me to receive and understand the message.
