Preparing for Employer Info Sessions - While Employer Info Sessions are not recruiting events, students have the opportunity to learn about an organization’s mission, culture, service offerings, and career opportunities that may exist now or in the future. - The format of Employer Info Sessions usually have one of these 3 designs: o o o - Guests often include alumni, hiring managers or recruiters. o - - Formal PPT presentation with question & answer session at the end. Informal presentation (may use PPT), with questions encouraged throughout to make it more interactive. Very informal, “round table” discussion with no PPT. This is the most conversational and interactive. Alumni and hiring managers may spend more time providing details on the organization’s mission, culture, sample projects, hiring process and the specific roles/responsibilities that MPH candidates hold. Some alumni are not hiring managers, but are rather at the “peer” level). Recruiters may spend more time providing information on the organization’s mission and culture, and then focus more on the hiring process and the background/skills they seek as they screen candidates for the hiring managers. All are important people to know. Attending an Employer Info Session is a great opportunity for students to make an impression. For this reason, we recommend that you research the organization prior and have thoughtful questions prepared based on that research. Research tips include: o Review the employer’s mission – Use the employer’s website to look for its mission statement -- something that outlines the company's values (perhaps on an About Us or similar page). o Recent achievements – Look for Press Releases or News page that links to recent news releases. (Or simply search the Web for news about the organization.) Then think about the long-term implications of this news. o Guest speakers – If the employer’s site has a search tool, use it to search for the names of the people. This is suggested more for an alumna or hiring manager vs. a recruiter. Then look to LinkedIn or do a general Web search to get some more background information about them. You might find some common ground that you can bring up in conversation, or a recent professional achievement for which you can pay a compliment. o The industry – Next, learn what general-interest publications, trade publications and blogs are saying about this employer and the industry as a whole. Attending an Employer Info Session is an excellent opportunity for you to introduce yourself to a guest speaker after the presentation. If you plan on doing this, professional dress is highly recommended. o If you are actively in a practicum, internship or job search, you may want to bring your resume with you in case the guest asks you for a copy. Resumes should be reviewed by Career Services before sharing with an employer. Please check the Career Services website for resume drop-in hours.
