What affects the value of a city? • Changes in transportation, economic conditions, and popular preference Example: Pittsburgh was considered a very wealthy city until the steel industry was shipped overseas What was the name of the canal that connected Lake Erie to the Hudson River? • The Erie Canal What groups of people are responsible for building the railroad? • Asian and European Immigrants, Mainly Chinese and Irish What city became the largest city in the mid-west? • Chicago, Illinois What was the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956? • The federal government provided $26 million dollars to build Interstate Highways that were more that 4,000 miles long Other than automobiles, what made it possible for people to travel longer distances to work? • Public transportation such as trolleys, commuter trains, and subways Where did suburbs grow? • At the end of rail lines because land was less expensive, but they still had a way to get to the city to work Advancements in transportation give people the power to decide where they _operated their businesses__ and ___where they lived_. Explain the levels of economic activity that canned vegetables travel through to get to your home. 1. Primary Economic Activity – Corn is grown on a farm 2. Secondary Economic Activity – The corn is taken to a plant where it is processed and canned 3. Tertiary Economic Activity – The cans of corn are taken to a warehouse to be distributed to stores across the US 4. Quaternary Economic Activity – Deciding how the cans will be distributed, and eventually moved to stores where they will be sold to the general public
