NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION • An object at rest stays at rest, an object in motion stays in motion, UNLESS it is acted upon by an unbalanced force. • Book won’t move until push it. FORCES THAT CHANGE MOTION • On earth, gravity & friction are forces that can change an object’s motion. • Baseball hit, keeps going until gravity and friction bring it to a stop. INERTIA • An object’s resistance to change its motion. • A force is required to change an object’s motion. • Shopping cart will not move until a force makes it move. INERTIA & MASS • Inertia depends on mass. • More mass = more inertia • More inertia = more force required to change motion. • Empty cart VS full one. ND 2 NEWTON’S LAW • Acceleration depends on: object’s mass & the force acting on the object. ACCELERATION FORMULA ACCELERATION = Net Force Mass Net force = kg X m/sec. A NEWTON (N). 1 Newton = a force to move 1kg at 1m/sec. CHANGES IN FORCE & MASS • To change the object’s movement, you must change: force required or mass of object. • Moving a teacher desk. Too heavy to move--take drawers out (mass) or get someone to help you push (extra force).
