ACTIVITY Go outside and look at the leaves of some plants up close. Look at the top of the leaf and the bottom of the leaf. Record any differences you may see between the top and bottom of the leaves. Collect 4 leaves from a monocot plant. Monocot plants are palms, grasses and other plants that long veins in a single direction and no branching. Monocot leaf example. 1. Take the leaves indoors and place two leaves in a clear glass and 2 leaves in a different glass. Cover the leaves with water. 2. Tap the glasses to remove any air bubbles and cover both glasses with the leaves in them with foil or a cardboard box. You could also place them in a dark closet or cabinet. 3. Leave the glasses in the dark for 20 minutes. 4. After 20 minutes, check the leaves in the glasses for any bubbles. Remove the bubbles by gently swirling or stirring the leaves in the glass. 5. Remove one of the glasses with leaves in it and place in a sunny area, preferably outside. Leave the other glass covered or in the dark cabinet. 6. Let both glasses sit for 30 minutes. 7. After 30 minutes, check the leaves in each of the glasses for the presence of small bubbles. 8. Take a picture of each glass with the leaves in it to show the formation of bubbles. 9. If there are no bubbles in the glass exposed to sunlight after 30 minutes, let it set for an additional 30 minutes and observe again. Turn your pictures in with this document AND add them to your lab report.
