Why is the Family Important in the Society

Families serve as the basic building block or unit of society; thus, the stability of the community depends on the stability of the families that comprise it. The following are what I believe are the important functions that families perform to help preserve this social stability and otherwise keep a society working. First of all, families are our most intimate social environment. This is the place where we begin the vital processes of socializing and learning how to thrive in the world. The family serves as a major influence in developing our personality and identity. And the overall character that is developed is what helps a child in becoming an important or responsible member of society. Second is that the family is ideally the source of any type of support for its members. That support could be in the form of something physical, such as proving food, shelter, or other essentials. But It could also be emotional support such as love, comfort, and help in times of emotional distress. Regardless of what type of support it is, it has an impact on person’s well-being and plays crucial role in developing a healthy individual. And it has been said that at the core of a healthy society are healthy individuals within a heathy family. Lastly, the family also helps us establish our values and beliefs in life. This is important because family values influence the decisions that people make both within the family structure and outside of it. Therefore, having solid family values helps people make the right decisions in life, especially when he/she becomes an important contributing member of society. During this time of the pandemic, I think the best way to protect my family is to remain vigilant and still comply with the quarantine and social distancing rules. COVID-19 has been affecting us for more than half a year, and we have repeatedly learned about the importance of social distancing, cleaning our hands often and wearing masks. However, after many months of COVID-19 updates, these basic safety measures start to seem like old news and feeling overwhelmed, tired, or frustrated about everything related to coronavirus is understandable. However, as a medical student, I know that the best way to protect my family is to still follow these rules and remain updated with the current state of the pandemic especially around our area. And because my family wanted to take these precautions as seriously as possible, this led to my parents opting to work from home and my brother and I to take online classes. Since we were spending more time at home with each other, trying to strengthen our bond as a family came naturally. We noticed that we were able to spend more quality time and give undivided attention to each other, and throughout quarantine we discovered simple actions that helped us to bond more. The following are the things that we are now able to do that helped improved our family life: (1) having breakfast, lunch, and dinner together, (2) exercising together in the morning, (3) being able to pray and watch a service together, (4) doing fun activities together such as watching a movie, and (5) having time to talk to each other about how we feel and what we are going through. Overall, because we had more time to spend for each other, this helped us communicate more and not focus too much on our work and school life. This not only helped in lessening the stress but also allowed us to monitor each other’s mental and physical health, while trying to keep our relationships strong and connected. While pandemic fatigue is a natural response to this stressful situation, it’s still essential to practice COVID-19 safety basics. Right now, coronavirus cases, deaths and hospitalizations are increasing in our community. To protect our loved ones, our communities and ourselves, we need to fight pandemic fatigue and commit to keeping each other safe while also taking care of our mental health. Here’s how. Living with family members in a confined space for long periods of time and being regularly bombarded by information about the epidemic can lead to boredom, anxiety, worry and panic. It may also lead to feelings of depression and fear, and induce physical changes like chest congestion and insomnia. These are all normal reactions to stressful circumstances. For families with children, spending more time together increases the opportunities for parents to communicate with their child. To get through the COVID-19 outbreak, family members must remain the essential source of support by helping all family members to feel safe, positive and maintain a healthy mind. .as well as get a sense of what social cooperation and participation in society is like. The family moulds the character and personality of the individual. It is through the family that society imparts its culture to the individual. Thus, the family is very important in the form of a specializing agency. As previous chapters indicated, no society is possible without adequate socialization of its young. In most societies, the family is the major unit in which socialization happens. Parents, siblings, and, if the family is extended rather than nuclear, other relatives all help to socialize children from the time they are born. Second, It provides them food, clothing, shelter, and other essentials, and it also provides, and other types of intangible support that we all need. Fourth, the family provides its members with a social identity. Children are born into their parents’ social class, race and ethnicity, religion, and so forth. As we have seen in earlier chapters, social identity is important for our life chances. Some children have advantages throughout life because of the social identity they acquire from their parents, while others face many obstacles because the social class or race and ethnicity into which they are born is at the bottom of the social hierarchy. They bear the primary responsibility for the education and socialization of children as well as instilling values of citizenship and belonging in the society. Families provide material and non-material care and support to its members, from children to the elderly or those suffering from illness, sheltering them from hardship to the maximum possible extent. Moreover, the family unit is a community of persons where moral values are taught and the spiritual and cultural heritage of society are passed on.
