Follow-Up Questions 1. In 24 hours, how much media and media texts did you encounter or “ingest”? ● Based on the data, I encountered around 18-20 hours of media exposure, including active and passive consumption. Social media, streaming services, and music accounted for the majority of this exposure. 2. How much of that was intentional – as in you sought it out purposely? ● Approximately 12-14 hours were intentional. This includes social media scrolling, watching YouTube or Netflix, listening to music, and playing games. 3. How much of it was just around you – as background visuals or “noise” that you had no control over? ● Around 4-6 hours consisted of passive media exposure, such as background music in stores, TV playing in the background at home, advertisements on billboards, and online ads. 4. Before this survey, how much of that “background noise” were you really aware of? Do you think that any of it could have had a subliminal effect on you? ● Before tracking my media consumption, I wasn’t fully aware of how much passive media I absorbed daily. I do think some of it has a subliminal effect. For example, seeing advertisements repeatedly (like fast-food deals or trending fashion items) makes me more likely to notice them or consider buying something I normally wouldn’t. Similarly, hearing a catchy commercial jingle might make me think about a product later. 5. Do you think that the amount of media you see in a 24-hour period could have any cumulative adverse effects on you? For example, what you eat, what you wear, who you hang out with, what constitutes “cool” in your life? ● Yes, prolonged exposure to media can definitely shape behavior and lifestyle choices. Social media trends can influence fashion choices, while advertisements push consumer habits. Additionally, excessive screen time can impact sleep patterns and mental health. While media provides valuable information and entertainment, it's important to maintain a balance and critically evaluate the content we consume.
