7-1 Discussion: Insights and Conclusions In Milestone One, I stated GM operated under an autocratic organizational model. Based on the several levels of employees who were aware of the faulty ignition switches and tried to voice their concern to no avail, and the firing of employees once the issue came to light, still failing to address the company’s cultural issue. I also discussed how GM’s competitor, Ford uses a more supportive organization model, seeking out motivators for their employees and working to inspire the staff to work to their cultural standards. Beyond the automotive industry, the clothing brand Patagonia practices a system organizational model, empowering their employees through rewarding work, flexibility and encouragement (Leonard, 2019). Also in Milestone One, I discussed the pressures of economical impact on company culture. The push to earn more, gain more customers, and improve the bottom line has led to companies like Wells Fargo and Volkswagen making unethical decisions, which eventually land them with a bad public image and a negative impact to their bottom line. My views shared in Milestone One have remained stable. I still believe that the autocratic model, relying on a paycheck as the primary motivator, is an outdated model that is not sustainable in today’s job market. I also believe the system and supportive models are much more aligned with the social climate we operate in today. Working in nuclear, I have seen a shift toward a more supportive organizational model. Although much of our structure is requirements-based, companies have begun taking initiatives to tailor to the younger generations coming up in our careers. My current site has an entire organization dedicated to promoting a “compelling place to work”, which has brought in conveniences like food trucks, a coffee shop and gyms to improve employee satisfaction with their workplace and help contribute to work/life balance in an area where most people have a 30-60 minute commute each day. Although at times the projects implemented by the group come across as cheesy, it has added value to the company through increased employee satisfaction.
