Cellular respiration is a chemical process that plants, animals, and all living organisms where they break down glucose and turn it into energy to perform other cellular tasks. It’s a necessary process because the energy created during cellular respiration is used for other tasks within the cell that require that energy. 3. What does it get broken down to and where in the cell does this happen? Glucose gets broken down in the first stage of cell respiration. This is called glycolysis and it takes place in the cytoplasm. During this stage, the enzymes break a glucose molecule into 2 pyruvate molecules, releasing energy that is then transferred into ATP. 5. Why do you think all organisms (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) can use glycolysis but not all organisms use the Krebs cycle and ETC (only eukaryotes do)? Prokaryotes lack the membrane bound organelles (including the mitochondria) and the Krebs cycle and ETC require mitochondria to happen. Therefore, not every organism can go through the Krebs cycle and ETC only those with eukaryotes can. 6. What is the difference in an aerobic process and anaerobic process? The aerobic process requires oxygen while the anaerobic process does not. 7. Name the three processes of aerobic cellular respiration. We use lactic acid fermentation in our muscle cells when the muscle cells can’t get oxygen quick enough during aerobic respiration. Bacteria and yeast use alcohol fermentation in these processes. 10.
