Description of Procedure
surgical perforation of the chest wall and pleural space with a large bore needle
Indications
- pneumonia, blunt, crushing, or penetrating
chest injuries, exudates, transudates- large
amounts of fluid in the pleural space
compress lung tissue and cause pain, SOB
Interpretation of Findings
aspirated fluid is analyzed for general
appearance, cell counts, peorein and
glucose content, the presence of enzymes
such as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and
amylase, abnormal cells, and culture
Potential Complications
- mediastinal shift- pneumothorax- bleedinginfection
