Courts decision Significance The Second Amendment goes against State and local governments, but is suggested to be reasonable because it bans felons from owning a firearm and prevents firearms from being allowed on school properties. This shows that even amendments can be limited by states and local governments. Even with guns being limited to processes, felons will still get handguns/firearms one way or another. Facts/Background Relevant Portions In 1982 Chicago adopted a handgun ban to combat crime and minimize handgun-related deaths and injuries. To own a gun, you must go through a complex registration process, and most people are banned from owning/possessing a handgun. th Residents argued the 14 Amendment makes the 2nd amendment applicable to state and local gov. Even if guns were an important part of this country, much has changed since then. Unlike D.C., a complete ban on handguns, Chicago simply only established procedures there residents must follow. Making rules against owning a firearm affects more legal citizens because felons and criminals will still get firearms or handguns illegally anyway.
