The purpose of the short scene between Herrick and the prisoners is to show how terrible Salem was. Herrick being drunk shows how he felt guilt of the witch trials. This contributes to the tone as the emotion and conditions for the scene adds to the sad and grim tone. 3. For what does Elizabeth ask John to forgive her? She asks John to forgive her for being suspicious, making it awkward between them. 4. Why do you think Danforth is said to be alarmed at the news that Abigail and Mercy Lewis have fled? I think Danforth was alarmed because Abigail and Mercy Lewis were very crucial witnesses to the crimes. 5. In Act Four, the final scenes with John Proctor highlight how he refuses to allow his integrity to be compromised by the power of a corrupted government. How does this relate to McCarthyism? This relates to McCarthyism because it was similar as the time was filled with mass hysteria and corrupt government, causing executions. The jury believed that the man who testified was telling perjury. prosecutor A person who institutes legal proceedings against someone. The prosecutor sentenced the criminal to 12 years in jail.
