Washington 28 September 2020 A SPACE CAT and Thesis A - The argument of Queen Elizabeth I speech is that she is devoted to her people and would do anything for them; they are all in this dilemma together, and she would die alongside them. She is claiming that she and her troops are going to win; they are strong and loyal and they are going to beat the Spanish. S - The speaker is Queen Elizabeth I, a woman deeply devoted to her country. She had a strong will, and she knew that her main duty was to protect England from an invasion from the Spanish Armada. Since it is a speech, is in her perspective completely. P - Queen Elizabeth I was hoping to establish confidence in her people to defeat the Spanish people when/if they invade. She hopes for the troops to bring them to victory by instilling positive motivation, and the idea that they are all in this together. A - The audience was the troops at Tilbury before the battle with the troops of Spain, but intended her message for all the people of England. (but it wasn’t broadcasted like that in JFK speech). Her use of, “my loving people” at the beginning of her assumes a relationship between her and her people that is usually positive. C - During the time this was given at a time of great worry and outbreak in England. Queen Elizabeth I had just signed a death warrant for Mary Queen of Scots, and it catalyzed the Spanish plan to invade them. What might be on her mind is the thought that she is a great enemy of the Spanish and how they want to unseat her from the English throne. E - Queen Elizabeth I gave this speech because the Spanish Armada was threatening an invasion and she wanted to establish her worth on the throne and to prove her loyalty to them. C - The Queen utilizes syntax to list the lengths she would go through for her people. Her whole speech is connected through commas and semi-colons showing how she listed her devotion to them. She also uses diction to create her motivating speech. The queen refers to her people as “faithful” and “loving,” praising their “loyalty” and “goodwill.” These positive words allow her subjects to see her as a caring, kind leader whose praise urges them to fight for their country. A - Ethos is used when she declares “ “I have always so behaved myself that, under God…”. The Queen puts herself under the greater authority of God, connecting with her audience’s belief that monarchs are appointed by God and operate under his power. In emphasizing her authority comes from God, she builds her credibility. (But pathos is the main appeal.) T- Queen Elizabeth I is apprehensive, but also optimistic. She is a little uneasy in the beginning because of the threat of the Spanish but then provides an uplifting message to re-establish the connection with her people and inspire them that they will foresee a victory. Thesis: In her speech to the forces at Tilbury, Queen Elizabeth I demonstrate her devotion to her people. She uses syntax and diction to confidently motivate her people to defend their country from their Spanish invaders.
