The Urgency of Intersectionality 1. What is Crenshaw’s purpose? Inform, Persuade, or entertain her audience? Crenshaw’s purpose is to inform the audience about violence towards Black women. She explains that there this is an issue that is not talked about enough and that it has no name. Without a name for the problem, people struggle to see the problem, and without seeing the problem, people cannot solve it. 2. What is her thesis/main argument? Many people ignore the discrimination toward African American women because they fail to see how the two problems of gender and race discrimination fit together and frame the issue. 3. What are the details of her main argument? Why is it a BIG problem? Crenshaw talks about how the stories of black women of violence are not talked about at the rate they need to be in order to be heard by the public and create a movement to help them. It is a large problem because black women of color are subject to racism and sexism. They are left to fight this problem entirely on their own because of the lack of support around the issue. 4. How does she support her argument? What rhetorical or visual tools does she use? Crenshaw uses stories of individuals who have lost their lives to police brutality to help support her argument. She has a person sing a song to honor the lives of the individuals lost and encourages everyone to say their name in order to start creating change. She uses images and videos to help put a name and face to the issue and create context behind the issue.
